In Conversation with Kasia Kingsmill (née Pasternak), Partner and Head of Immigration at Brecher.
How did you get started in immigration law?
I came into immigration law almost by accident. While working as a receptionist at an OISC-registered firm (now replaced by the Immigration Advice Authority) and studying for my part-time LLB, I was offered the chance to take on more substantial work. I jumped at the opportunity, and I’ve been passionate about immigration law ever since.
What major challenges have you seen your clients face in the past decade?
Since I began practising immigration law in 2007, the field has become an increasingly prominent topic in national debate, with each government seeking to reform the system in line with shifting public opinion.
Over the years, clients have encountered a number of significant challenges, from the introduction of the Points-Based System and sponsor licence requirements in 2008, to the aftermath of the EU Referendum and the recent expansion and restructuring of the immigration framework.
One of the defining features of immigration law is how frequently it changes, often at very short notice. This makes the work both stimulating and demanding. A fun fact: since 2021, there have been over 20 Statements of Changes to the Immigration Rules, each revising visa categories, eligibility criteria, and procedural details. Never a dull moment!
What’s the most rewarding part of your work?
For me, it’s building long-lasting relationships with clients. I enjoy getting to know their stories, understanding their goals, and helping them achieve them, whether they’re individuals or corporate clients. That ongoing trust and connection is what makes the work truly meaningful.
Why did you choose to join Brecher?
What stood out to me was the senior management team’s genuine passion for their work and commitment to their clients, it was second to none. I was excited to join that environment and help establish Brecher’s immigration offering to support both existing and new clients.
Coming from a single-focus firm, I’ve seen first-hand the benefits a multi-service law firm brings to client strategy and satisfaction. At Brecher, I have the opportunity to work alongside colleagues across departments to deliver a fully integrated, client-focused legal service something that’s increasingly important in today’s complex legal landscape.
What keeps you busy outside of work?
At home, my two young children keep me on my toes. I’m an enthusiastic, but still amateur, baker and recently I’ve taken up gardening and jam making to complement my sourdough baking. My husband likes to joke that I’m probably too young to be making jam! When I can, I enjoy curling up with a good novel away from the hustle and bustle of the household.
